BEE Liberia

app and responsive website.

Project Overview

The Product: BEE Liberia is a Boothwyn-based organization focused on educating Liberian students. The organization needs a tool that helps people ease and secure the donation process. BEE Liberia’s’ primary target users include college students and adults who would like to donate to help educate and empower Liberian student and communities through donations.

The Problem: Donors get frustrated when attempting to make a donation and the process seems too complex. They also would like to verify that the nonprofit organization they give to is solid, so that they feel a bit more confident when donating.

The Goal: Design an app and responsive website that will improve the process of donations and help users feel confident when donating.

My Responsibilities:

Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs, determining information architecture, and responsive design.

My Role:

UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery

Understanding the user

User Research Summary

I used BEE Liberia’s data on their donation process to develop interview questions, which were then used to conduct user interviews. Most interview participants reported feeling frustrated about the process of donating on a mobile app or responsive website. They also were very unsure about the validity of nonprofit organizations. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be even more open and willing to donate if they had a smooth and easy donation process or some sort of external organization that verified nonprofits.

Persona

Competitive Audit

An audit of a few competitor’s products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the BEE Liberia donation app.

Ideation

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on easy giving options and a way to verify an organization.

Starting the Design

Digital wireframes

After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the BEE Liberia app. These designs focused on offering an easy giving option to help donors.

.

Low-fidelity prototype

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of placing a simple and easy donation.

Usability study: parameters

Study type: Unmoderated usability study

Location: United States, remote

Participants: 5 participants

Length: 10 minutes

Usability study: findings

Easy Donation Process: People wanted to easily donate with fewer clicks and easy navigation.

Verified Organization: People want to verify that there donation is going to a solid organization and not feel like they are wasting their money

Refining the design

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design updates like adding color to the “Give now” button on the home screen to easily donate. Additional design changes included adding a colored “Charity navigation badge” which indicated that the organization you are giving to is verified.

High-fidelity prototype

The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

Accessibility considerations

Responsive Design

Site Map

With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the BEE Liberia sitemap to guide the organizational structure of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.

Responsive designs

The designs for screen size variation included mobile, tablet, and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs of each device and screen size.

Impact

One quote from peer feedback was that :

I like how clear this app was, with very few buttons so I knew what I was supposed to do.
